Travelling With Your Pendant Tool: Customs, Airport Security, International Wear

You're flying out next week with the pendant on. Will airport security flag it? Will customs at the destination care? Will the chain set off the metal detector? Honest answers based on actual traveller reports.

Airport security (X-ray + metal detector)

The pendant on its chain reads as standard jewellery on the X-ray. You don't need to remove it for security in most countries. The metal mass is small — comparable to a watch or a thick chain — and security operators see thousands of necklaces a day.

Edge cases:

  • If you trigger the body scanner, security may ask you to remove it for a second pass. Standard jewellery removal procedure. Drop it in the tray, walk through, collect it.
  • Some Middle Eastern airports (Doha, Riyadh) have stricter screening — they may swab the pendant for trace residue. If your pendant has residue from any controlled substance, that swab will detect it. Clean before flying. Cleaning guide.

Customs at the destination

The pendant is jewellery for customs purposes. Declare jewellery if a destination's import limits require it (most countries: $10,000+ in jewellery value before declaration). A single $150 pendant is well under any threshold.

Receipts: if you're worried about being asked to prove a personal-use item isn't a commercial import, screenshot your GoBlow order confirmation before you fly. Rare but possible at strict borders.

Countries where you should leave it at home

Some countries have strict laws around any drug-adjacent paraphernalia regardless of intended use. Per GoBlow's travel guidance: avoid travelling with the pendant to Singapore, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Malaysia, China, and several others. The pendant reads as a small scoop tool which can attract scrutiny in jurisdictions with zero-tolerance policies.

Safe destinations include: AU, NZ, UK, all of Western Europe, Canada, Mexico, most of South America, Japan, South Korea, USA (with state-level variation).

Wearing it abroad

Once through customs, the pendant reads as jewellery in every venue we've tested across NZ, UK, Canada, and EU. London, Berlin, Paris, Auckland, Toronto — all green.

The carry strategy for long-haul

Wear it through security on a 50–55cm chain, under a t-shirt. It goes through unnoticed. On the plane, sleep with it on — it's not large enough to dig into your sternum like a watch crown does.
