What to Pack for a Road Trip — EDC for Australian Road Travel

A road trip in Australia is not a road trip in Europe. The distances are punishing, the climate is hostile to anything precious, and your carry has to survive a week of being thrown from console to glove box to beach bag and back.

The two kits — body and glove box

  • The glove box kit. Lives in the car. Tools, charger cables, sunscreen, paperwork. Heavy, replaceable.
  • The body-carry kit. On you the whole trip. Survives the petrol station, the camping night, the swim, the bar at the end of the day.

Most people get the glove box right and the body carry wrong. The fix is the same one nightlife figured out — wear it.

Why pendant carry is the road trip answer

  • Always on you. Won't leave it on a bench at a roadhouse. Won't lose it in a hire car.
  • Survives the environments. Beach stop, camping ground, hotel pool, hike. machined stainless steel handles heat, salt, sweat, dust.
  • Secure when you sleep. Motel, campsite, hostel — essentials around your neck, not in an unattended car.

Finish by route

  • Steel — Default. Anonymous, scratch-tolerant. Melbourne–Cairns or the Nullarbor.
  • Black PVD — Hides dust and scratches. The desert and outback pick.
  • Gold or Rose Gold — Road-to-Byron pick. Reads as jewellery in beach bars and rooftop hotels.
  • Rainbow — Festival road trips. Catches the sun.

The Australian-specific factors

  • Heat. A car cabin in Karratha at 3pm is 70°C. machined stainless steel doesn't care. Plastic carry does.
  • Salt. Coastal runs corrode anything that isn't stainless or PVD-coated.
  • Dust. Outback dust gets into everything. Threaded closure keeps it out.
  • Distance. If something breaks 800km from the nearest town, you're on your own.
