How to Swap Chain Length Safely Without Damaging Your Pendant

You bought the 50cm chain and want to switch to 60cm. Or you've layered an extra chain and now the pendant sits wrong. Swapping chain length is a 30-second job — but there are two ways to do it wrong that cost you a pendant or a chain.

The two failure modes

  1. Forcing the chain through a closed bail. The pendant bail (the loop where the chain threads through) is sized for one chain at a time. Forcing two chains or a thicker chain damages the bail edge.
  2. Opening and re-closing the chain clasp repeatedly. Lobster clasps weaken with repeated opening — usually fine, but cheap clasps fail by the 50th cycle. Plan to swap chains rarely, not daily.

The right way to swap

  1. Lay the pendant flat on a soft surface (a folded t-shirt works). This stops it bouncing if you drop it during the swap.
  2. Open the existing chain's clasp at the back. Slide the chain out through the bail.
  3. Thread the new chain through the bail in the same direction.
  4. Close the new chain's clasp. Done.

Total time: 20–30 seconds. No tools needed.

What chain types work with the GoBlow pendant

The bail is sized for chains up to 3mm wide. Box chain (default), thin Cuban, and snake chain all fit. Avoid: heavy curb chains over 4mm — they bind in the bail and can wear it.

If you want to wear two chains at once (layering)

Don't thread both through the same bail. Wear two separate chains — one with the pendant, one without — at different lengths. Full layering guide.

If the pendant won't slide on the chain

The chain's links are too thick for the bail. Don't force it. Either:

  • Switch to a thinner chain
  • Add a small jump ring between the bail and the chain (any jeweller will fit one in 5 minutes)
