The Necklace Chain Guide — How to Pick the Right Chain for Your Pendant

The chain is half the carry

People obsess over the pendant and treat the chain as an afterthought. Then they wear a $150 piece of marine-grade stainless on a plated curb chain that turns their neck green inside a fortnight. The chain is the half of the carry you don't think about until it fails.

Built for this? See chain material spec.

Material — match the pendant

The pendant is machined stainless steel. The chain should be too.

  • machined stainless steel: The right answer. Same alloy, same corrosion resistance, same lifespan. Won't react with skin, won't tarnish.
  • Plated chains: Avoid. The plating wears off at the contact points within months.
  • Leather cord: Looks the part for about six months. Then sweat, sun, and friction destroy it.
  • Ball chain: Catches on every fabric you own. Not built for pendant load.

Length — 50cm is the answer for most people

  • 45cm: Sits at the throat. Too short — bounces against the collarbone.
  • 50cm: Mid-sternum. The sweet spot. Hides under any tee, doesn't bounce at running pace.
  • 55cm: Lower sternum. Works for taller frames. Starts to swing more during movement.
  • 60cm+: Solar plexus. Looks loose, swings constantly.

Gauge — 2–3mm

The pendant is 12mm in diameter. A 2.5mm box or curb chain in machined stainless steel is the canonical pairing. Below 2mm looks fragile. Above 3mm competes with the pendant for attention.

Closure — lobster clasp

  • Lobster clasp: Spring-loaded, mechanical, won't open under load. Correct.
  • Barrel clasp: Threaded barrels unscrew themselves under movement. Lost-pendant territory.
  • Magnetic clasp: Convenient until shock load opens it.

Aesthetic pairings

  • Steel pendant on steel box chain — the most versatile, most worn pairing.
  • Black PVD on matte black chain — the full monochrome carry.
  • Gold on gold curb chain — statement carry.
  • Rainbow on neutral chain — Rainbow is the hero; let the finish do the work.

The honest expectation

The pendant lasts decades. The chain is a consumable — expect to replace yours every 2–3 years of daily wear. That's the chain absorbing the friction so the pendant doesn't have to.
