Cuban vs Box vs Rope Chain: How to Pick the Right Necklace for Your Pendant

Cuban Vs Box Vs Rope Chain How To Pick The Right Necklace Fo

Once you've picked the pendant, the chain decision is the next one most people get wrong. Wrong chain = the pendant doesn't sit right, looks cheap, or breaks within a year. Here's the breakdown by chain type.

Box chain (GoBlow's recommended default)

Square cross-section links. Sits flat against the chest. Holds the pendant straight without twisting.

Best for: Pendant tools specifically — the flat profile keeps the pendant from spinning. Works with all 5 GoBlow finishes.
Look: minimalist, slightly geometric. Reads as men's jewellery first.
Strength: high. Box chain doesn't kink or weaken at single points like rope chains can.

This is what we ship as standard with the GoBlow chain.

Cuban link (curb chain)

Flat, interlocking oval links. Heavier visual weight. Reads as more deliberately "jewellery."

Best for: Worn alone or with a smaller decorative pendant. Heavier Cuban links can fight a pendant tool for visual weight.
Look: hip-hop / streetwear / Mediterranean men's jewellery aesthetic.
Strength: very high.

If you're already wearing Cuban link as your main chain, swap to box for the pendant tool — they fight each other.

Rope chain

Twisted, multi-strand structure. Catches light from every angle.

Best for: Decorative use. Less ideal for a pendant tool because the twisted structure causes the pendant to spin.
Look: classic, often in gold, traditional men's jewellery.
Strength: moderate. Rope chains can kink and weaken at single points if pulled hard.

Snake chain

Smooth, tubular construction. Sleek look.

Best for: Smaller pendants. Snake chains can break under the weight of a 12mm pendant tool over time.
Look: sleek, modern, often feminine-leaning.
Strength: low — not recommended for pendant tools.

Length recommendations

For the GoBlow pendant (12×82mm):

  • 50–55cm (20–22"): pendant sits at upper-chest, visible above most necklines. Default for most blokes.
  • 60cm (24"): pendant sits mid-chest, often hidden under a t-shirt or button-down. Stealth carry.
  • 65–70cm (26–28"): pendant sits low, visible only with open shirts. Layering territory.

Bottom line for pendant tool carry

Box chain in 50–55cm length, finish matched to the pendant. That's the default that works for 90% of blokes. Use rope or Cuban only if you're already committed to that aesthetic and willing to accept the trade-offs.
