"Will this last?" is the second-most-common pre-purchase question. Honest answer with actual numbers below.

The pendant body (machined stainless steel)

machined stainless steel is built for demanding everyday use designed for decades inside the human body. In normal pendant use, it doesn't corrode, doesn't fatigue, doesn't oxidise. Lifespan: indefinite for the underlying material.

The PVD finish

PVD coatings on jewellery typically show first wear at 4–7 years of daily use, depending on activity level. Heavy contact points (the back of the pendant against the chest) wear first. Expected finish life: 4 years warrantied, 7+ years in practice.

More on PVD lifespan.

The threaded closure

The threads are machined into the steel itself. Failure mode: stripping after thousands of cycles. With normal weekly cleaning use, the threads are good for 10,000+ open-close cycles — roughly 30 years of weekly use. Lifetime warranty backs this.

The chain (box chain in machined stainless steel or PVD)

Chain failure usually happens at one of two points: the clasp loop or the bail link. Box chains don't fatigue at the link junctions like rope chains do. Expected chain life: 5–8 years of daily wear before noticeable thinning.

The clasp

The clasp is the highest-cycle component on the chain — opens and closes daily. Cheap clasps fail by year 2; the lobster clasp on GoBlow chains is rated for 5,000+ cycles before noticeable wear. Lifetime hardware warranty.

What kills pendant tools fastest

  1. Direct impact damage — drops onto concrete or stone can dent the body or chip PVD at the impact point. Not a wear issue, an event issue.
  2. Chemical exposure — daily chlorine pools, prolonged acetone or paint-thinner contact will degrade PVD over years. Avoid.
  3. Lost — by far the most common end-of-life. The pendant outlasts most owners' ability to keep track of it. Buy a second chain in a different length to wear at home so you don't take the main one to high-loss venues.

The realistic ownership timeline

  • Year 1: looks new, full performance
  • Year 2–3: develops light patina, still looks intentional
  • Year 4–5: first hairline scratches visible, finish still uniform
  • Year 6–8: visible patina, contact-point wear on PVD finishes, chain may need replacement
  • Year 10+: looks lived-in, function unchanged, may want a new chain
