The disposable cycle
A $20 plated keychain vial from Amazon lasts about 4 months before the plating flakes, the closure stops sealing, or the keychain ring snaps. Most people throw it out and buy another. Over 5 years that's $300+ in repeat purchases, plus 15 plated steel objects in landfill.
The plating is electroplated nickel and brass — neither readily recyclable, both leaching into soil over decades.
The single-purchase alternative

Compare to plated jewellery: the plating processes use cyanide-based electrolytes that are environmentally hazardous to dispose of. Most of the cheap-jewellery supply chain runs through unregulated facilities.
The transport footprint
