What is a Cacao Snuff Spoon? (And Why Carry-Grade Matters)

If you've landed here, you probably already know what this is for. A cacao snuff spoon is a small, precision-made carry tool — typically worn as a necklace pendant — designed to scoop and portion small amounts of cacao or fine-ground botanicals cleanly and discreetly. They're used at festivals, bars, house parties, and anywhere else discretion matters.

Built for this? See GoBlow for cacao.

The term "snuff spoon" has old roots (snuff tobacco was taken similarly for centuries), but the modern carry spoon is a different beast — cleaner, more precise, and increasingly a piece of jewellery in its own right.

What separates a good cacao spoon from a cheap one

Most people who start looking for a carry spoon find two categories: cheap Chinese-made alloy pieces (under $30, usually zinc or aluminium), and a small number of premium carry tools made from machined stainless steel. The difference matters more than the price gap suggests.

  • Material: machined stainless steel is non-porous, non-reactive, and doesn't oxidise. Cheap alloy spoons can leach metals and leave residue on anything they touch. If you're using a spoon with cacao or botanicals, material quality is non-negotiable.
  • Finish durability: PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) finishes — the same process used on premium watches — bond at the molecular level. They don't chip, flake, or rub off. Cheap electroplated pieces look the part for a month, then wear through.
  • Closure: A sealed magnetic closure means the spoon stays shut until you want it open. No accidental spills in your pocket or bag. The best carry spoons open with one hand.
  • Scoop geometry: This is where most cheap pieces fail. A properly engineered spoon has a bowl depth and edge profile that makes scooping clean and consistent. Too shallow and you lose product; too deep and dosing becomes imprecise.

Why people wear them as jewellery

The best cacao snuff spoons double as wearable jewellery. That's intentional — a pendant tool that looks good around your neck is a carry tool you'll actually use, rather than one buried at the bottom of a bag. Finishes like gold PVD, rose gold, and rainbow titanium are chosen specifically to sit well against skin and look intentional, not industrial.

At GoBlow, we designed the pendant to be worn. The chain attachment sits clean against the bail. The proportions are jewellery-scale. You can wear it out, and no one needs to ask what it is unless you want them to.

How to choose

A few questions that narrow it down:

  • Where do you carry? If it's festivals and outdoor events, something understated (Steel, Black) tends to read as jewellery. If it's clubs and nights out, Gold or Rose Gold punches harder.
  • Pocket or pendant? Most carry spoons are designed to be worn, but some people prefer to keep theirs in a small pouch or case. If you're pocketing it, the magnetic closure matters more.
  • Do you want colour? Rainbow titanium is the most visible finish — it moves under light. If you want something that disappears, brushed steel is the move.

The GoBlow carry spoon

GoBlow makes a single, precision-machined machined stainless steel carry spoon in five PVD finishes. It comes in a gift box with a stainless chain. The magnetic closure is sealed tight. The scoop geometry is precise. It's the tool we wanted and couldn't find — so we built it.

If you carry with intention, this is the one.
