EDC for Beach and Water Sports — Stainless vs the Ocean

Saltwater, chlorine, sand, UV. Any one of those will end an electroplated piece in a season. All four together, across a summer, will turn most "everyday" carry into something you throw out in March. This is where material choice stops being marketing and starts being the entire product.

machined stainless steel was engineered for offshore marine hardware. The same alloy that lives bolted to the side of a ship in open ocean is the alloy the pendant is machined from. The beach isn't a stress test — it's the environment the metal was designed for.
What machined stainless steel survives without complaint
- Saltwater: The original use case. Doesn't pit, corrode, or tarnish. Swim with it.
- Chlorinated pools: Chlorine is brutal on plated and silver jewellery; machined stainless steel doesn't notice.
- Sand abrasion: Brushed machined stainless steel hides the micro-scratches sand creates.
- UV: Stainless doesn't degrade under sun.
Which finish for the water
Steel is the obvious answer — no coating, nothing to maintain. The PVD finishes also survive saltwater. PVD is a bonded finish deposited at the molecular level into the steel surface, not painted on. It doesn't peel, doesn't lift, doesn't dissolve in salt. The one exception: prolonged hot spa or thermal pool exposure with high chemical content degrades any finish faster. Take the pendant off for a hot tub session. Wear it for the ocean.
The post-water rinse
Rinse with fresh water after saltwater exposure — not for the metal, but to stop salt crystals forming in the thread grooves of the closure. Thirty seconds under a tap, air-dry, done.
The threaded closure in water
Threads stay shut in water — they don't flex, weaken, or unseat. A threaded closure in machined stainless steel is the same in water as it is in air. Twist-to-lock into the groove, sealed for the swim.

- Hot spa with high chemical content: Take it off.
